Monsieur Doumani

(Glitterbeat, Nicosia)

The island of Cyprus, tucked away at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, in the proximity of the Turkish and Syrian coast, has always been at the crossroads between the Orient and the Occident.

Monsieur Doumani are deeply involved with the rich cultural traditions of their home country, and are taking these traces of ancient lore onto a whole new level. Their playfulness and experimentation gain them a sound completely their own. Or as they prefer to humbly put it: "Monsieur Doumani compose Cypriot songs that draw inspiration from contemporary Cypriot society as well as from the shaky conditions of our era." They are also considered to be the atoll’s best band - but are they even a band? Seasoned rockists would probably consider the power trio a most minimal set up qualified to be called by that term, i.e. a unit featuring heavily amplified bass and guitar as well as a drummer whacking his / her brains out on tom-toms.

The all-acoustic Doumani, on the contrary, limit themselves to an odd instrumental line up of wandering guitar, Tzouras (Greek string instrument) and trombone (!), but are still able to adapt the sound and spirit of a psychedelic jam band in full flight, waving their freak flag high on the best drugs available: "Monsieur Doumani specializes in smoking, drinking Grappa and playing music from the island of Cyprus."

Their new album „Pissoúrin" came out on the mighty Glitterbeat label in September 2021 and received rave reviews worldwide.
